The Woodcutter’s Hut is our office, shared with the furniture designer and maker Hugh Miller. Occupying the second floor of a Victorian warehouse in Liverpool’s Baltic Triangle, the design was conceived as a woodcutter’s hut amongst a forest of columns within the larger studio space.
The design had to meet two practical challenges. The first was the need to create a clean and quiet area for office-based work and client meetings within a busy carpentry workshop. The second was to make best use of limited sources of natural light. The ‘hut’ was designed around the only two windows into the space, creating a light and airy office and meeting room. The bespoke furniture by Hugh Miller includes a raised desk area designed to maximise views over to the old Liverpool docks and waterside. A meeting table at lower level juts out into the studio with a large picture window allowing visitors to watch cabinetmakers at work, insulating the office from noise and dust whilst also sharing natural light with the workshop.
