IceHotel

Founded in 1989, the IceHotel in Jukkasjarvi Sweden is the world’s first hotel made of snow and ice. Each winter the hotel is built anew from the ice of the River Torne – melting back into the river in the Spring. Sculpted by artists and designers selected from around the world, each ArtSuite is totally unique, giving guests a once in a lifetime opportunity to sleep inside art works that are always beautiful, and often surreal.

The Ikebana Room, designed in collaboration with applied artist Hugh Miller, was selected as one of 20 ArtSuite bedrooms for the 2016 Ice Hotel. Guests enter the room through a small corridor flanked by a beautiful ice screen, steps lead them up to a raised bed platform that is surrounded by a textured, vaulted ceiling where a dramatic arch made of ice blocks frames a delicate cherry blossom tree sparkling in the blue light. The room has been designed to be a peaceful space – that is quiet, calm and contemplative.

The Ikebana room has been widely reported in the print media, and was featured on the BBC series Amazing Hotels in May 2017.
